Mechanism of Action

Modulates cholinergic neurotransmission in helminths by acting as an acetylcholine receptor agonist at neuromuscular junctions of parasites, causing spastic paralysis. Also demonstrates mild analgesic activity through peripheral pain pathway modulation.

Isolated from Embelia ribes root bark and demonstrated anthelmintic activity in in vitro assays against Ascaris suum and Haemonchus contortus. Limited pharmacokinetic data available. Activity appears complementary to the benzoquinone compounds (embelin, vilangin).
