Eugenol
Clinical trialMechanism of Action
Research Notes
Well-characterised anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in vitro. Analgesic mechanism via sodium channel blockade established. Widely used in dentistry as a topical analgesic.
Eugenol's dental analgesic efficacy is well-established in clinical dental settings (zinc oxide-eugenol preparations). In vitro anti-inflammatory IC50 for COX-2 inhibition is comparable to ibuprofen in reporter assays. Antimicrobial MIC against S. aureus, E. coli, and Candida albicans documented across multiple independent studies.
Well-studied phenylpropanoid with established anti-inflammatory mechanism through cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase inhibition.
Eugenol contributes to cinnamon twig warming and pain-relieving properties with a milder warming quality versus Rou Gui.
Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) confirm eugenol-based formulations (zinc oxide eugenol) as effective analgesics for dental pain. A 2019 RCT (n=60) demonstrated clove extract equivalent to benzocaine gel for post-extraction pain. In vitro and animal studies consistently show COX-2 inhibition and NF-κB suppression. A clinical trial in type 2 diabetics (Zafar et al., 2009) showed significant improvements in fasting glucose, lipid profiles, and insulin sensitivity with 250 mg clove daily over 30 days.
Well-characterized phenylpropanoid with established antibacterial, antiviral, and analgesic activity.
Eugenol demonstrates potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Clinical trials of holy basil extract show reductions in stress markers, improved fasting glucose, and lipid profile improvements.
Extensively studied phenylpropanoid with strong evidence for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activity.
