Mechanism of Action

Metabolised in the liver to reactive pyrrole intermediates that cross-link DNA and proteins, causing hepatocyte necrosis and veno-occlusive disease

Research Notes

Pyrrolizidine alkaloid hepatotoxicity is well-established. Cumulative effect detectable only by liver biopsy. Numerous case reports of hepatic veno-occlusive disease from PA-containing plants.
