Trillin

Mechanism of Action

Trillin is a diosgenin glycoside specific to Trillium species. It contributes to the astringent and hemostatic properties of beth root through interaction with platelet membranes and vascular endothelium, promoting vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation at sites of bleeding. Trillin also demonstrates cytotoxic activity through disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential and induction of apoptosis.

Trillin has been characterized in phytochemical studies of multiple Trillium species. A 2013 study in Steroids identified trillin and related saponins in T. tschonoskii and demonstrated cytotoxicity against A549 and HepG2 cells. The hemostatic mechanisms attributed to trillin are based primarily on traditional evidence and extrapolation from the known properties of steroidal saponins, with limited direct experimental confirmation of hemostatic activity.
