Sennosides A and B

Clinical trial

Mechanism of Action

Dianthrone glycosides converted by colonic bacteria to rhein anthrone, which stimulates peristalsis and fluid secretion into the large intestine

Research Notes

Sennosides are among the most well-studied botanical laxatives. Clinical trials confirm reliable cathartic effect within 6–12 hours of oral dosing. Mechanism of action is well characterised through bacterial hydrolysis to active rhein anthrone.
