Polysaccharides (P. baumii fraction)

Moderate

Mechanism of Action

Activate innate and adaptive immunity by promoting proliferation of splenic T and B lymphocytes, enhancing peritoneal and splenic NK cell cytotoxicity, and stimulating cytokine secretion. In immunosuppressed models, P. baumii polysaccharides ameliorate cyclophosphamide-induced myelosuppression by supporting bone marrow cell recovery, normalizing hematological markers, and restoring T-lymphocyte numbers. Inhibit tumor growth and metastasis through direct cytotoxicity and immune-mediated anti-tumor surveillance.

Research Notes

Administration of P. baumii ethanol extract to cyclophosphamide-immunosuppressed mice significantly enhanced T- and B-lymphocyte proliferation, NK cell activity, bone marrow cell counts, and cytokine levels (Nutrition Research, 2020). Water-soluble polysaccharides showed immunostimulatory activity on splenic lymphocyte proliferation and macrophage activation in vitro. Polysaccharide fractions demonstrated tumor growth inhibition in multiple preclinical cancer models including hepatocellular carcinoma and colon cancer.
