Polysaccharide-protein complexes

Moderate

Mechanism of Action

High-molecular-weight complexes combining beta-glucan polysaccharides with protein moieties. Activate innate immunity by binding toll-like receptors (TLR-2, TLR-4) and complement receptors on macrophages and dendritic cells, triggering NF-kB-mediated cytokine release. Enhance respiratory mucosal immunity by stimulating secretory IgA production and reducing airway inflammatory mediators (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-8). Also enhance NK cell cytotoxicity and T-cell proliferation.

Research Notes

An open-label prospective clinical study demonstrated improvements in respiratory function markers, enhanced immune parameters, and improved antioxidant status in human subjects supplemented with L. rhinocerus sclerotium extract. Multiple preclinical studies confirmed immunomodulatory activity through macrophage activation, enhanced phagocytosis, and increased cytokine production. A 2018 review noted the paucity of validation studies but acknowledged promising respiratory health data.
