Phenylethylamine

Observational

Mechanism of Action

Stimulates release of dopamine and norepinephrine from presynaptic vesicles; acts as a substrate for monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B); rapid metabolism limits systemic effects from oral ingestion

Research Notes

CacaoSouth American

Phenylethylamine (PEA) is an endogenous trace amine associated with mood elevation and focused attention. While oral bioavailability is limited due to rapid MAO-B metabolism, cacao contains MAO inhibitors that may partially protect PEA from degradation. Clinical evidence for mood effects is primarily observational.
