Mechanism of Action

Arginine antimetabolite that is incorporated into proteins in place of arginine, leading to dysfunctional protein synthesis in rapidly dividing cells; inhibits viral replication including HIV reverse transcriptase; activates immune surveillance via immunomodulatory pathways.

Research Notes

In vitro studies demonstrate anti-proliferative activity against breast and cervical cancer cell lines. Pilot HIV trials showed improvements in body weight and CD4 counts. Theoretical risk of inducing lupus-like autoimmunity with chronic high-dose use.
