Isomenthone

Preliminary

Mechanism of Action

Isomenthone is a less toxic monoterpene present in pennyroyal essential oil that contributes to the herb's carminative and antispasmodic properties. It modulates gastrointestinal smooth-muscle calcium channels, reducing spasm, and has mild antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria.

Research Notes

PennyroyalWestern

Isomenthone has been identified in pennyroyal oil GC-MS analyses at 2–20% depending on chemotype. In vitro studies show antispasmodic effects on isolated guinea pig ileum comparable to other mint monoterpenes. No human clinical trials exist for isolated isomenthone.
