Fomentariol

Preliminary

Mechanism of Action

Dual enzyme inhibitor targeting alpha-glucosidase (competitive inhibition exceeding acarbose potency) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), reducing postprandial glucose spikes and prolonging incretin hormone half-life. Additionally blocks STAT3 phosphorylation in macrophages, attenuating LPS-induced inflammatory signaling cascades including iNOS and COX-2 expression.

Research Notes

In vitro studies demonstrated fomentariol's alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity surpassed the pharmaceutical standard acarbose. A 2015 study in Molecules showed that methyl 9-oxo-(10E,12E)-octadecadienoate from F. fomentarius attenuated LPS-induced inflammation by blocking STAT3 phosphorylation in murine macrophages. Fomentariol also serves as a diagnostic chemical marker for the species, turning dark blood-red with potassium hydroxide application.
