Ergosterol peroxide
PreliminaryMechanism of Action
Research Notes
Ergosterol peroxide has been identified in S. crispa fruiting bodies alongside ergosterol and other sterol derivatives. Anti-proliferative effects against gastric and hepatic carcinoma cell lines have been demonstrated in vitro for this compound class across multiple mushroom species. Its presence in Sparassis contributes to the overall anti-tumor and immunomodulatory profile of the mushroom. Evidence is preclinical.
Ergosterol peroxide isolated from F. fomentarius demonstrated anti-proliferative effects against SGC-7091 human gastric carcinoma cells in vitro. Animal studies in HepA tumor-bearing mice showed a 41.42% tumor inhibition rate with concurrent increases in TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, and IL-2 secretion. The compound constitutes approximately 2.27% of fruiting body sterol content.
