Epicatechin

Clinical trial

Mechanism of Action

Stimulates endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) to increase nitric oxide production; inhibits NADPH oxidase reducing oxidative stress; decreases platelet aggregation through inhibition of thromboxane synthesis; modulates NF-kB and Nrf2 pathways

Research Notes

CacaoSouth American

Epicatechin is one of the most extensively studied plant flavanols. The landmark Kuna Indian observational studies and numerous RCTs demonstrate significant improvements in flow-mediated dilation, blood pressure reduction (3-8 mmHg systolic), insulin sensitivity, and LDL oxidation resistance. The COSMOS trial (2022) with over 21,000 participants showed cardiovascular benefits of cocoa flavanol supplementation.
