Cordyceps militaris polysaccharides (CMP / beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucans)

Preliminary

Mechanism of Action

CMP consists of β-(1→3)-linked glucose backbones with β-(1→6)-branch points, with a mean molecular weight of approximately 18.2 kDa for the linear fraction. These polysaccharides activate innate immune cells via Dectin-1 and TLR-2 receptor binding on macrophages and dendritic cells, upregulating NF-κB-mediated cytokine production. CMP also demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory activity through inhibition of NO and PGE2 production in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Mean beta-glucan content in cultured C. militaris is approximately 32.7% (w/w).

Research Notes

CordycepsMushroom

Structural characterization by Jo et al. (2022, International Journal of Molecular Sciences) identified a linear β-(1→3)-glucan of 18.2 kDa with anti-inflammatory properties in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. Bi et al. (2018, PLOS ONE) demonstrated that C. militaris β-glucans significantly reduced NO and PGE2 production in vitro. An animal study by Park et al. (2014) showed CMP enhanced NK cell activity and T-cell proliferation in immunosuppressed mice. Found in BOTH fruiting body and mycelium; hot-water extraction required for solubilization.
