Mechanism of Action

Induces nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in human astrocyte cell cultures. NGF activates TrkA receptors on cholinergic neurons, promoting survival, differentiation, and synaptic plasticity through MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt signaling cascades. BDNF activates TrkB receptors with broader neuronal effects including hippocampal neuroplasticity and long-term potentiation. Also exhibits moderate cytotoxic activity against selected cancer cell lines.

Research Notes

Isolated and characterized by Wittstein et al. (2016) from H. coralloides basidiomes. In vitro studies using human 1321N1 astrocyte cell cultures confirmed NGF and BDNF gene expression induction. Corallocins are structurally distinct from hericenones and erinacines, representing a unique chemical class of neurotrophic compounds. No in vivo studies or human clinical trials have been conducted on isolated corallocins.
