Irritates intestinal mucosa, stimulates large bowel peristalsis, and increases enteric fluid and electrolyte secretion, producing watery catharsis and colic; also inhibits hepatic glucose output and activates PPAR-gamma in experimental models

Identified as the primary cathartic principle in colocynth pulp. Antidiabetic effects observed in preclinical animal models through PPAR-gamma activation and hepatic glucose output inhibition. Limited human clinical data.
