Mechanism of Action

Binds and sequesters carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aflatoxin in the GI tract, reducing absorption; antioxidant through singlet oxygen quenching; supports hematopoiesis through structural similarity to hemoglobin

Research Notes

ChlorellaWestern

Chlorella contains the highest concentration of chlorophyll of any known organism (3-5% dry weight). Clinical trials in China demonstrated that chlorophyllin (a chlorophyll derivative) reduced aflatoxin biomarkers by 55% in populations with high dietary aflatoxin exposure. Chlorophyll's structural similarity to hemoglobin has led to its traditional use as a "blood builder," though direct hematopoietic effects in humans require further study.
