Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)

Preliminary

Mechanism of Action

Modulates neuronal excitability via intracellular calcium signaling; enhances GABA-A receptor-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission; buffers gastric acid (antacid action); provides elemental calcium for bone matrix and enzymatic cofactor roles

Research Notes

Oyster shell-derived calcium carbonate demonstrates sedative activity in animal models including potentiation of pentobarbital sleep time and reduction of spontaneous locomotor activity. Clinical evidence for calcium supplementation in mood and sleep disorders exists but is not specific to oyster shell form. Antacid efficacy well-established. Bioavailability of oyster-shell calcium comparable to pharmaceutical CaCO3.
