Betanin

Clinical trial

Mechanism of Action

Potent antioxidant via electron donation and free radical scavenging; inhibits lipid peroxidation and LDL oxidation; anti-inflammatory through COX-2 and NF-kB pathway inhibition

Research Notes

Beet RootWestern

Betanin is the primary red pigment in beet root and has demonstrated superior antioxidant capacity compared to many common dietary antioxidants in ORAC and DPPH assays. In vivo studies show reduction in oxidative stress biomarkers and protection against hepatotoxicity. Clinical evidence supports antioxidant activity when consumed as whole food or juice.
