Baccharin

Animal

Mechanism of Action

Provides gastroprotective activity through stimulation of gastric mucus secretion, enhancement of mucosal prostaglandin E2 production, and inhibition of H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump). Also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity through NF-kB pathway suppression in gastric epithelial cells.

Research Notes

Animal studies using ethanol- and indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer models demonstrated that baccharin reduced ulcer index by 60–80% compared to controls, comparable to omeprazole at the tested doses. A 2009 study in Chemico-Biological Interactions showed baccharin's antitumor activity against Ehrlich tumor cells in mice, with mechanism involving increased apoptosis markers.
