Research Notes

Aloe VeraWestern

Aloin is a potent stimulant laxative with well-established pharmacology. The FDA reclassified aloe latex laxatives as Category III (insufficient data for GRAS status) in 2002. Chronic use is associated with melanosis coli and electrolyte disturbance. Animal studies have raised concerns about carcinogenicity of whole-leaf extracts containing aloin.
