Mechanism of Action

Adenosine acts as an endogenous signaling molecule at four G-protein-coupled receptor subtypes: A1 (inhibitory, reducing heart rate and neural excitability), A2A (vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, expressed on immune cells), A2B (low-affinity, pro-inflammatory at high concentrations), and A3 (cardioprotective, anti-ischemic). In Cordyceps preparations, exogenous adenosine potentiates coronary vasodilation, reduces myocardial oxygen demand, and modulates immune cell trafficking. Adenosine content in C. militaris fruiting body is approximately 0.18% by weight.
Endogenous purine nucleoside that activates four G-protein coupled adenosine receptors (A1, A2A, A2B, A3). A1 receptor activation mediates sedative, anti-arrhythmic, and neuroprotective effects. A2A activation promotes vasodilation, anti-inflammatory responses, and immunomodulation. In the kidney, adenosine modulates glomerular filtration rate through afferent arteriole vasoconstriction (A1) and efferent vasodilation (A2). Also serves as substrate for cellular energy metabolism via phosphorylation to AMP/ADP/ATP.

Adenosine levels in C. militaris have been quantified at 0.18% in fruiting body and 0.06% in mycelium (Huang et al., 2009, Journal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry). The physiological effects of adenosine receptor signaling are extensively documented in cardiovascular pharmacology (Jacobson & Gao, 2006, Nature Reviews Drug Discovery). In the context of Cordyceps supplementation, adenosine is believed to contribute to smooth muscle relaxation and improved tissue oxygenation, though direct clinical evidence attributing athletic performance effects specifically to adenosine (vs. cordycepin) is limited.

Adenosine is a well-characterized bioactive compound present in multiple Cordyceps species. Its content in C. guangdongensis contributes to the species' overall pharmacological profile, particularly immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities noted in Cordyceps genus reviews. Adenosine content is used as a quality marker for Cordyceps products in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
